Relaunch vs. Reboot - DC Comics - The New 52

Earlier this month DC Comics released their marketing strategy for educating the public and which will attempt to garner new readers for the comic book company. Much of what DC has done to date for The New 52 includes educating the current comic book reading public about what the relaunch will mean to the comics they read. Some readers have struggled with the relaunch and many have worries about what will happen to their favorite characters with The New 52.

Relaunching a title is different than rebooting a comic book title, when a title is rebooted all that has happened to date is wiped away as if it never happened. However, when a comic book is relaunched it keeps some, if not all, of the past history in place and tries to reintroduce a character to a new audience. To better understand the difference we can look at the DC Comics movie character of Batman. In the Tim Burton Batman film, the Joker is played by Jack Nicholson and Batman is Michael Keaton.

In later films, the character of Batman was relaunched to be Val Kilmer and George Clooney. With the most recent films by Christopher Nolan, the Batman films were rebooted so that there was a new Batman (Christian Bale) a new Joker (Heath Ledger) and a retelling of the origins of Batman.

What DC Comics is doing with The New 52 September initiative is relaunching, rather than rebooting, their comic book titles.
