Three lessons learned from 100 blog posts

Milestones are points in time that allow for reflection on accomplishments. Even smaller successes need to be recognized from time to time. The milestone that I am recognizing today is that this exact post is my 100th for this blog. I have a passion for business, marketing, and copywriting and I created this blog to share some of the thing I have learned over time. Some of the things I have learned specifically from this blog include:

1. Creating specific categories for blog posts helps to focus your writing. Every Monday, I know that I need to write a Marketing Monday post, Website Wednesdays help direct my readers, and Final Copy Fridays allow me the opportunity to share my ideas on copywriting. In between these posts are Tuesdays and Thursdays which allow me to write 20 Word Summaries or 20 Word Reviews on books I am reading. Sometimes on Saturdays I write up a Saturday Sports post, but those only come around when a story inspires me or the Los Angeles Kings are playing. The main point is that I don’t need to write in an undirected fashion, I know what I need to write for each day making the challenge of writing a more directed one.

2. I feel that writing has improved over time. I have regimented myself to try and write as many days as possible. My first post was March 18, 2010 and my 100th post is August 13, 2010 meaning that in less than 5 months I have written over 100 posts. I have read often about how writers improve through the process of writing regularly. A baseball player can not keep up a good batting average if they never go to batting practice or play in any games. Though writing is different than hitting a fastball from Jonathan Broxton, the lesson learned is that good hitters and good writers need to constantly practice their skills to keep them sharp.

3. Writing a blog on a regular basis can be done. Though many businesses may not need to post to a blog daily, if I were to take my 100 blog posts and only use one a week, I would have nearly two years of posts for a website. Since regularly updated content helps with search engine rankings, a blog is a perfect place to regularly update the content of your site. Sometimes, just for fun, I’ll Google some of the more popular titles of my blog posts just to see where I rank. Some of my posts rank really high given the fact that my blog is less than 6 months old.

Here’s to the start of another 100 blog posts. Thanks for going along on the learning journey with me. If you have suggestions about topics you’d like me to cover or how I can improve, please share it in the comments below.
