March Madness on Ice

The weekend is here. It’s March and the Madness is in full swing. So why am I writing about hockey in Southern California?

The Los Angeles Kings are playing solid hockey this year. For the past couple of years the team has shown promise, but they never made the move to become a highly competitive team. This year is different.

Strong goaltending has recently been an attribute the Kings have lacked. This year Jonathan Quick is making a run at being a top three goaltender in the NHL. His play has kept the team in playoff contention as the Kings currently hold on to the sixth of eight playoff spots. Quick is consistent in the net, makes the saves that he needs to make, and adds in some spectacular plays to set him apart from the competition. At only 23 years old, Quick has a long and promising career ahead of him, and I look forward to many more years of seeing number 32 play well for the Kings.

There are additional players who are contributing to the overall success of the Kings this year. There are more Saturdays to come and thus more opportunities to highlight the team’s strengths, but the play of Quick is one key aspect in the success of the team this year.
